Crushing It!: How Great Entrepreneurs Build Their Business and Influence- and How You Can, Too” by Gary Vaynerchuk, also known as ʺGary Veeʺ, became a highly anticipated book in the entrepreneur community when it was released in the fall of 2017. He has written a slew of other books but this one intended to follow up on his first one, Crush It!: Why Now Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion.
Like Crush It!, Crushing It! is broken up into smaller chunks within the chapters. Amidst these smaller chunks are sections titled “How I’m Crushing It.” Each of these sections tells the personal story of an entrepreneur, who happened to have read Crush It!, and what they struggled with and how they succeeded. They used the information that they learned from the previous book to help them improve in their businesses. There are also “Imagine This” sections where Vaynerchuk comes up with hypothetical, but very realistic and relatable examples of people who drastically changed their lives for the better little by little by using social media.
As an immensely successful social media guru, Vaynerchuk’s thoughts and opinions don’t go unnoticed. One thing that he says is, “No matter what kind of influencer you want to become, everyone must start with this step: create a Facebook page” (135). He believes that bigger things are in Facebook’s future, including a heavier use of video, so anyone who wants to start a business needs to create a Facebook page right in the beginning. Vaynerchuk also creates an argument for the application, Snapchat. He claimed that Snapchat is always one of the top five apps on the App Store. I checked and sure enough it was listed at number four. He wrote Crushing It! before Snapchat changed a lot about its platform, so I wonder if he still believes in the app as much as he did just a few months ago. If anything, that proves that social media is constantly changing and updating and that entrepreneurs need to keep up with all of it. He also says that YouTube is still a relevant platform to use even though it will take longer to succeed on there than it did in 2011.
Vaynerchuk offers an immense amount of business value throughout the book as well. There are many great quotes that some may want written on their walls—bedroom, bathroom, or Facebook. In Crush It! he discusses the art of storytelling and he touches on it again in Crushing It!. He says:
It’s true that great content hinges on great storytelling and that every story in the universe has already been told. But not by you. You are unique, and you provide nuance, perspective, and details that no one else can (79).
Everyone has the ability to tell their story and to promote their passion. Crushing It provides ideas on how to properly execute it on social media. More about the author can be found at: https://www.garyvaynerchuk.com/ or you can follow Gary on any social media platform.
