(TBT) “The Enchanted” by Rene Denfeld

Goodreads Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I usually take notes as I read through a novel so I am better prepared to write a review about it but I didn’t take any notes on Rene Denfeld’s, The Enchanted. That’s because I was so absorbed in the book that I did not want to take the time to stop reading to take notes. I misunderstood what the novel was going to be about so I was a little confused at first. I suggest that readers go to the back of the book and read “A Letter to the Reader” in the “About the Book” section before starting the novel. I think that would help readers approach the book more open mindedly. The narrator has a very creative mind and the way he tells the story could maybe turn off some readers. Reading the letter to the reader could help the reader come into the story more prepared for the magical aura that the narrator gives to his prison. I did not read the “About the Book” section until the end but I probably would have liked the book even more than I did if I had read that part first.

My eyes were glued to the pages. I was easily transported to the dungeon where the narrator was located and could sympathize with him. The story includes the perspective of a handful of characters who the reader will have no problem caring about. Denfeld demonstrates her talent as a writer throughout the novel. The story flows with ease and is beautifully written. She is a gifted story teller and molded a wonderful novel from it.

I tend to like books where the writer can go a little over the top with somewhat weird situations when other people can despise it. An example from the novel is that the narrator believes that horses are running underneath the prison when in reality it is just an earthquake. It is a bit quirky but the narrator has a mental illness and has lived in a prison for a lot of his life so I think it would make sense for him to think that it’s horses.

The Enchanted is Rene Denfeld’s first novel. Although it was not on a best sellers list, it has won numerous awards. This will be one of those novels you will never forget about. Anyone who enjoys reading fiction should add this book to their reading list.
